As part of their chatbot project research, Jack and Jill decided to interview different people about how they used chatbots in their daily lives. Their first stop was their neighbor, Mrs. Rodriguez, an energetic seventy-two-year-old who lived alone but was always embracing new technology.
"Come in, come in!" Mrs. Rodriguez welcomed them warmly. Her small living room was cozy, with family photos covering most surfaces. On the side table sat a small spherical device with a glowing ring on top.
"Is that a voice assistant?" Jack asked, pointing at the device.
"Oh yes, that's my little helper," Mrs. Rodriguez smiled. "Would you like to see how I use it? Alexa, what's on my calendar today?"
The device lit up and a pleasant voice responded: "You have a doctor's appointment at 2:30 PM and a video call with Miguel and the grandkids at 6:00 PM."
"That's so useful!" Jill exclaimed, taking notes in her book.
"It really is," Mrs. Rodriguez nodded. "At my age, remembering every appointment can be challenging. But there's more it does for me. Alexa, what medications do I need to take this morning?"
"You need to take your blood pressure pill and vitamin D supplement with breakfast," the device answered promptly.
"The medication reminders are a lifesaver—literally!" Mrs. Rodriguez chuckled. "My daughter Carmen helped me set it up. It reminds me about my pills, can call for help if I fall, and even lets me video chat with my grandchildren without needing to figure out complicated apps."
Jack and Jill looked at each other, impressed. This was an application of chatbots they hadn't considered.
"Does it ever make mistakes?" Jack asked.
"Oh, certainly! Sometimes it misunderstands what I'm asking, especially with my accent," Mrs. Rodriguez explained. "But it's getting better all the time. When I first got it two years ago, it was much more limited."
After thanking Mrs. Rodriguez, their next interview was with Dr. Lee at the local children's hospital, who had agreed to meet them briefly during his lunch break.
"We use specialized chatbots in several ways here," Dr. Lee explained as he showed them a tablet with a friendly cartoon character interface. "This is MediPal, a chatbot that helps our younger patients understand their treatments."
He demonstrated by asking, "MediPal, can you explain an X-ray to an 8-year-old?"
The chatbot responded with a simple, child-friendly explanation complete with colorful illustrations: "An X-ray is like taking a special picture that can see through your skin to look at your bones! It doesn't hurt at all—it's just like having your photo taken. The machine might make some funny noises, but you just need to stay very still for a few seconds."
"That's amazing," Jill said. "It makes medical stuff less scary for kids."
"Exactly," Dr. Lee nodded. "We also have chatbots that help our nurses by answering common questions from patients' families, freeing up more time for direct care."
Their final interview that day was with Mr. Abara, who had a visual impairment and used chatbots in yet another way.
"Voice assistants have changed my life," he told them. "I can ask for information, send messages, control smart devices in my home, and even identify objects by taking pictures with my phone."
He demonstrated by holding up a can and taking a photo with his smartphone. "What's this object?" he asked his phone.
"This appears to be a can of tomato soup," his phone responded.
"Before this technology, I needed help identifying many products," Mr. Abara explained. "Now I can be much more independent."
As Jack and Jill walked home that evening, they discussed everything they'd learned.
"I had no idea chatbots could help people in so many important ways," Jack said thoughtfully.
"Me neither," Jill agreed. "They're not just for answering random questions or customer service. They're actually making life better for people who need assistance, like Mrs. Rodriguez and Mr. Abara."
"And helping kids feel less scared at hospitals," Jack added. "I think we're getting a much bigger picture of what chatbots can do."
"Definitely," said Jill. "They're tools that can be used in all sorts of helpful ways. I can't wait to include these examples in our project."
